One of the special features of Crystal Castle was its innovative game control. Unlike many arcade games of the time, which used a traditional joystick, Crystal Castle featured a unique control device called the "Trak-Ball". This controller allowed players to move Bentley Bear by rolling a ball, offering an immersive, tactile gaming experience.

The trackball concept wasn't totally unknown before Crystal Castle, (it had been used in centipede, for example) but it wasn't as widespread in arcade games. The trackball had previously been used in industrial and military applications, but Crystal Castle was one of the few mainstream arcade games to adopt it significantly and make it a central gameplay feature.

It was this ingenious integration in Crystal Castle that helped popularize the trackball in the video game industry and pave the way for its use in many other arcade games and even on home gaming platforms. So, although the trackball wasn't invented specifically for Crystal Castle, the game played an important role in its spread and adoption into video game culture.
